Learning to play

I've been trying to learn how to play again - how to let go and just let things happen. Its quite hard when you are so used to really focusing on detail to let the paint just do what it wants to do. In an effort to free myself up I am playing with watercolours - a medium that I had thought was totally uncontrollable but now learning that is not the case. So a little play with a lemon thanks to Jean Haines' new book "Atmospheric Watercolours". Sampler of my watercolour paint colours and those of the Derwent Watercolour pencils that just arrived.

Hi Anita. Yes indeed, ... Letting go, and not worrying about detail is the key! I'm reading Hazel Soan's 'Ten minute watercolours'. It's a tiny book but chock full of quotes, hints, tips and inspirational sketches to try to get you to loosen up ... and speed up. She says things like: 'let the scene create the watercolour, don't use watercolour to reproduce the scene' and 'tone is more important than colour'.
Love the lemon painting! Have fun with your watercolour pencils:)
